Robert Lopez (born February 23, 1975) is an American songwriter of musicals. He is best known for co-creating The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q, for which he received Tony Awards for both works.

He, his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and Christophe Beck composed the music for Frozen. The couple also wrote the song "Making Today a Perfect Day" for the short Frozen Fever.

Early Life[]

Lopez was born in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, on February 23, 1975. He is of Filipino descent.

Lopez became interested in songwriting from an early age; his first song written at the young age of seven. He attended Hunter College High School, located in New York City. He received his B.A. in English from Yale. He was also a member of Yale's Spizzwinks(?), a male a cappella singing group.

Career[]

In 1998, Lopez met aspiring songwriter Jeff Marx in the prestigious BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop. Their first project together, Kermit, Prince of Denmark (a Muppet parody of Hamlet) won the Kleban Award for lyrics. However, when the script was submitted to the Jim Jenson Company, the script was rejected because it lacked "kid appeal." The story was considered for the next Muppet film by Chris Curtin in 2004, until he left the Disney Company.
