Personal life[]

Menzel was born in Queens, New York, to a Jewish family. Her mother was a therapist, and her father worked as a pajama salesman. She also has a younger sister named Cara. Her family lived in New Jersey since the time she was in kindergarten to third grade, but she considers herself to be raised in Syosset, New York.

After her parents divorced when she was fifteen, Menzel began working as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer. She continued this job throughout her time in the Tisch School of the Arts in New York University. While there, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in drama.

She has changed her surname from Mentzel to Menzel to better reflect the pronunciation the family had adopted in America.
